Conference Report

What Does Rural Isolation mean in an IT (Information Technology) World ?

The Community Development Group (CDG - Kaitaia) of the Department of Internal Affairs organized the Far and Mid North Cyber Hui 2003.

As the first flaxroots hui to be held in a rural region, information and communication technology that can be used to support people working in rural areas was show-cased. The conference provided a forum for people to share their experiences and ideas.

It created an environment where people shared openly, and a lot of energy and enthusiasm was generated for community IT projects throughout the North.

People working for Iwi, Hapu and Whanau, all sorts of community groups including social services, local employment, health and education groups, and government from throughout the Te Tai Tokerau attended the event. People came from: Whangape, Ahipara, Awanui, Te Hapua, Kaikohe, Taipa, Whirinaki-Hokianga, South Hokianga, Kaitaia and many other places in the north.

Topics covered included digital story telling, managing client information systems, interactive websites and using the Internet as a tool to build communities and business.

Venue

Flaxroots Technology Hui was held at Te Rangi Aniwaniwa, a place that educationalists will tell you is at the leading edge of education. It's a place the Board Chairperson and Principal, Hone and Hilda Harawira, see as being a vital player in developing young Maori to take their rightful place in the new society.
